The Devonport man was driving eastbound along Don Road when the incident occurred at around 10:30am.
Tasmania Police said a Ford utility towing a caravan was travelling westbound on Steele Street "prior to stopping to turn right through the intersection to continue on Steele Street".
"Whilst the utility was making its turn to continue onto Steele Street it has collided with the motorcycle rider," police said in a statement.
Emergency services raced to the scene and closed off Steele Street between Don Road and Sorell Street.
"The motorcycle rider was initially provided first aid at the scene by members of the public and emergency services prior to being transported by ambulance to the North West Regional Hospital," police said in a statement.
"The rider passed away a short time later."
The utility was driven by a 49-year-old male who was not physically injured by the crash.
He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Police crash investigators said they would "like to hear from any member of the public who may have seen either vehicle prior to the incident or who may have actually witnessed the crash".
