The City of Launceston council said it believed the boulder fell onto path overnight.
It is believed the boulder was dislodged because of Thursday’s rainfall.
Structural engineers, from the council, are assessing the walkway’s safety.
“Our crews will then undertake any repairs that may be necessary,” the council posted on its Facebook.
A fence on the walkway has been crushed.
The cost of the damage is unknown at this stage.
When the walkway is deemed safe, it will reopen.
