The Tasmanian Electoral Commission released the full list of candidates yesterday, revealing that a total of 414 candidates from around the state have nominated for a position on their council.
That number is slightly down on the 2007 local government elections, when 444 nominations were received for positions on the state's 29 councils.
However, with the Break O'Day and Glamorgan-Spring Bay councils exploring a possible merger, only 27 councils are going to the polls this year.
The incumbent mayors of the Launceston, Dorset and Meander Valley have all been challenged, but West Tamar Mayor Barry Easther, Northern Midlands Mayor Kim Polley, Flinders Mayor Carol Cox and George Town Mayor Doug Burt will face no contest.
Incumbent Meander Valley Mayor Mark Shelton will face Bob Richardson, while Dorset Mayor Peter Partridge has been challenged by Barry Jarvis and Roger McLennan.
In Launceston, incumbent Mayor Albert van Zetten is being challenged by Alderman Rosemary Armitage and Alderman Ted Sands.
A field of 20 is standing for the Launceston City Council, eight are standing for the Northern Midlands and 13 have nominated for Meander Valley.
Fifteen people have chosen to stand for West Tamar, 13 for Dorset, 10 for George Town and four for Flinders.
Devonport Mayor Lynn Laycock faces a challenge from Bill Wilson.
Postal voting packs will be delivered to voters between October 13 and 16.
