Tasmanian police inspector Tony Cerritelli said the man's body was recovered on Actaeon Island at 11.40am after an extensive sea and air search.
The 12-foot long dinghy he was using was discovered upturned on the northern part of the island.
Inspector Cerritelli said the man had been working with a commercial fishing crew on a larger boat when he took the dinghy out alone to collect cray pots.
At 10.15am, the fishing crew reported he had fallen overboard.
Marine rescue, the Westpac rescue helicopter, police divers, the PV Van Dieman and private vessels joined the search for the man.
His body was winched aboard the rescue helicopter and transported to Hobart.
His family has been notified.
The coroner and Worksafe are expected to investigate the report.
