On Tuesday, Premier Will Hodgman, Environment Minister Matthew Groom and Woolmers Estate chairman Peter Rae agreed the site would be a core tourist destination for Northern Tasmania once it opened in early 2017.
“Nigel’s vision is that this could be the centrepiece of heritage tourism in Tasmania,” Mr Rae said. The $5.3 million project received $1.75 million in government funding over four years, Mr Peck generously funded the rest of the development.
“Our investment in this centre recognises both the tourism benefits that Woolmers' offers, and the importance of helping the heritage and tourism sectors work together to promote year-round visitation experiences,” Mr Groom said.
Mr Peck and his wife, Patricia Peck, were unable to attend the unveiling but Mr Hodgman commended their vision, passion and commitment to the project.
